...for a slow person
There's something apocalyptic about the way in which crowds depart from the metro platform, all sense of community lost as individuals squeeze between person-shaped obstacles and sigh at one another. I'm quite good at this myself, actually, and often win the surface-bound race at Pyrénées.

But today, at Porte de Pantin, I was distracted by a certain older woman (sixty-five? ninety-five?) who had pulled over to the far left in order to take each step two-steps-at-a-time, heaving herself upwards with a beleaguered lack of haste. A whole trainload of people had swarmed past her by the time she had reached the halfway step, leaving only her in the middle and me at the top, standing around with an orange flower. Her eventual arrival had a certain joyful dignity, and she accepted the rose as a self-evident sign of her own triumph.

What a ridiculous (and delightful) thing for him to say!

Do keep dating this man.

Thank you.

I'm a fairly new reader to your LJ and just wanted to say that reading your daily updates is like receiving flowers, too.

Aww...that's so sweet! I busted my knees twice, and those times, I was often the slow person. One time, someone tried to pick my pocket when I was in a stairwell. I was transferring trains, and the able bodied people had already made it onto the platform, leaving me alone in the middle of the stairwell. I felt something brush my hand, so I spun around and came face to face with a guy who was removing his hand from my purse. He had managed to open my purse, but he hadn't gotten the wallet out. Whoever he was, he probably thought that I was an easy target, but thought otherwise when I started cussing them out. At any rate, having been in that position twice, I know how it feels and I think it's awesome that you gave her the flower. With everything she has to put up with, she deserves it!
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:16 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing this story - although it's sad to hear that you were the target of such nastiness. I'm pleased to hear that you would have appreciated a flower in a situation similar to the one in which this woman found herself.
jess_izzle on October 18th, 2006 05:31 pm (UTC)
this reminds me of my grandma. =D
reading this while listening to my favorite song (the boy who blocked his own shot) by my favorite band (brand new) made it extra-special. XD

And the gold medalist for climbing the métro steps slowly is...the older woman at Porte de Pantin. ;)

I like this station, it's so colorful.

I'm not much of a traveler myself, so I don't know how it goes in other big cities, but I must say the Parisian subway can be sheer madness and thus a little scary.
I'm more of a dodger when I have to, but I'm generally the girl who's going to mumble under her breath about how rude hurried people are, pushing past you like you're not even there.
That is why the lesson of the day is, take the bus. :)
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:18 pm (UTC)
Taking the bus in Paris has its own particular drawbacks; but, yeah - thanks for the travel advice!
siouxcq on October 18th, 2006 05:36 pm (UTC)
I love the metro.

It makes me very happy to hear that.

I'm new to your journal but I think this is my favorite flower thus far.

thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:19 pm (UTC)
It's proving very popular! Thanks for your vote.
carnival_esque on October 18th, 2006 05:41 pm (UTC)
Can't think of any eloquent way to put this:

I love your writing style. Especially in the post where you offered a flower to the man who rejected it and indicated it to the barman, and after that, you offered it to a gardener.
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:20 pm (UTC)
Thank you for these encouraging words. I'm very pleased to hear that you're enjoying my writing so much, even when I have to describe people as average as that man with his puzzles...

You are beautiful. Thank you.

Yes. I'm starting to feel the love, now. Thank you.
samtabsav on October 18th, 2006 05:45 pm (UTC)
Oh, you and your symbolism. I love it.

I hope, someday, as you're walking down the street, boarding the train, buying a cup of coffee, that someone hands you a flower.
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:21 pm (UTC)
That would be nice!
decorus_malum on October 18th, 2006 06:02 pm (UTC)
This is beautiful, probably my favorite so far. I'm a new reader, and in the middle of reading all the old flowers.(I've gotten to the begining of June)

I thought of you yesterday. I was picking my boyfriend up from the airport. He was due in at 6:30 in the morning, but due to complications didn't arive until 1:30 in the afternoon. I ended up asking the same woman three times for help, she was so nice about it that I wanted to give her a flower
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:22 pm (UTC)
Does that mean that you stayed at the airport for seven hours? I hope not. In any case I'm thrilled (and impressed) that you've done so much reading of this blog!

Thanks for being you.

Wow, this is my favorite story so far this week! You truly are one of a kind (and that old lady is too, it seems!), kudos. :)
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:25 pm (UTC)
I wonder what it is about this particular post that is winning so many special mentions? But, yes, God bless that singular old lady on the stairs!
cpsings4him on October 18th, 2006 06:31 pm (UTC)
Aww! I wish I could be there to see the faces of those you give these flowers to.
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:26 pm (UTC)
Oh, but that's my own particular pleasure, except in embarrassing crowded places...

New layout??

But this is such a sweet post. (as in adoreable? cute? erm.. yea.)

I don't know, I guess it just reminds me of my nanna. This older lady sounds similar to her.

thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:28 pm (UTC)
If your nanna is anything like this woman then she's an adorable person, indeed. I'm glad that you liked the post!

And, yeah - I've been wasting my time over all sorts of backgrounds...

I like this flower!

Lately I find myself wanting to give flowers to people. I ought to carry an emergency bouquet. That would make an odd sight: traipsing down the road with a bouquet, plucking flowers out of it for random people.
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:30 pm (UTC)
An odd sight, but a lovely one.

Which is as much to say that I favour the widespread introduction of emergency bouquets.
cherie_morte on October 18th, 2006 07:09 pm (UTC)
There are no words for how cute that is. I think this is my favorite one so far.
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:31 pm (UTC)
Thank you. So many people have had a particular liking for this post, about which I'm very pleased.
ladyeshen on October 18th, 2006 07:16 pm (UTC)
Awwww.

This made me exclaim "How cute!" aloud, which is quite a feat I must say. :3 Your writing invokes a very personal passion... that, and the fact that this story is just sublime in its simple sweetness.

Everything you write is like a poem! Your skills never cease to amaze me. Keep it up. ♥
thiel on October 18th, 2006 07:32 pm (UTC)
I'm completely delighted to hear about the verbal exclamations; and warm thanks for these thoughtful and encouraging remarks...

You're so wonderfully generous with your praise!
